Fancy watching a major international championship without having to travel abroad?
For 12 days in summer 2027, London will welcome 24 of Europe's leading men's and women's hockey teams for the EuroHockey Championships.
And this isn't just a handful of exhibition matches. It's a complete European Championship, with pool matches, quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches – giving members plenty of different days and matches to choose from.
Two very different venues
The first eight days of competition take place at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
There will be 42 matches at Lee Valley, including the pool stages and quarter-finals, giving spectators the chance to watch international hockey in a purpose-built hockey venue.
Then the championship changes scale completely.
From 5 August, the action moves to Twickenham Stoop, home of Harlequins Rugby, which will be transformed into a hockey stadium for the semi-finals and medal matches.
The Stoop will accommodate up to 15,000 spectators for what the organisers are calling “Big Stadium Hockey”.
Fancy watching England?
There are already some particularly interesting England matches in the schedule.
The England women open their tournament against reigning European champions the Netherlands at Lee Valley on:
Wednesday 28 July – 7.30pm
Then the England men play Germany, the men's World Cup champions, on:
Thursday 29 July – 7.30pm
England's women also play Germany on Saturday 31 July at 3.00pm, while England's men play Spain on Sunday 1 August at 4.00pm.
So members interested in supporting England have several possibilities before we even reach the knockout stages.
Or how about Finals Weekend?
For those who fancy experiencing the climax of a major international championship, the medal matches take place at Twickenham Stoop.
Saturday 7 August – Women's Medal Day
The bronze-medal match starts at 3.00pm followed by the Women's European Championship Final at 5.45pm.
Sunday 8 August – Men's Medal Day
The bronze-medal match starts at 2.30pm followed by the Men's European Championship Final at 5.15pm.
And because these are finals, you don't have to decide which country to support when buying your ticket – just turn up and discover who has made it through!
Why might this be a good group outing?
Hockey is fast, skilful and particularly easy to enjoy from the stands because the action is almost continuous.
And if you've never watched international hockey before, this is quite an opportunity to try it.
Members could choose an England match, a day containing several international matches, a semi-final session or go for the full experience of a European Championship finals day.
The organisers have deliberately designed the tournament to be accessible to new spectators as well as established hockey supporters.
Good value for a major championship
Day tickets can provide access to multiple matches, with some days featuring several international games.
The organisers have also emphasised affordability; for example, a family of four can attend a finals day for ÂŁ100.
Individual ticket prices vary according to the date, session and venue, so members interested in going can look at the available options and decide together what suits them.
Interested?
Perhaps you played hockey years ago.
Perhaps you follow the England or Great Britain teams.
Or perhaps you've never watched a hockey match in your life.
If your reaction is:
“A European Championship in London? That sounds worth trying.”
…find some other members who fancy it and choose a day together.
With 24 national teams, 12 days of competition and two London venues, there should certainly be plenty to choose from.
