πŸ€ Basketball – London Lions v Surrey 89ers

Super League Basketball

Sunday 14 March 2027 – 4.00pm
Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London
Adult tickets currently from around Β£12.70

Never been to a professional basketball match? This could be the perfect opportunity to try something completely different.

The London Lions take on the Surrey 89ers in a Super League Basketball fixture at the Copper Box Arena – part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park created for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Basketball is fast, energetic and easy to enjoy even if you don't know all the rules. Unlike some sports where you might wait quite a while for something to happen, basketball is almost constantly on the move!

Why might this be a good group outing?

This is exactly the sort of event our new group could be ideal for.

You might be curious about basketball but never have considered buying a ticket and going on your own. Find a few other members who are equally curious and suddenly you've got an afternoon out.

The Lions describe their home games as offering professional basketball at a fraction of the cost of much London sport. Adult seats at the Copper Box currently start at around Β£12.70, with better-positioned lower-tier seats typically around Β£24. Premium and courtside seating costs more.

And because this particular match is London v Surrey, we might even have to decide which side we're supporting!

The venue

The Copper Box Arena was used during the London 2012 Olympic Games and is now one of London's major indoor sporting venues.

It's located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, London E20 3HB.

Public transport is recommended. Hackney Wick Overground station is approximately a five-minute walk away, while Stratford station is around a 15-minute walk through the Olympic Park.

Interested?

Perhaps you've never watched basketball before.

That really doesn't matter.

If several members think:

β€œI've never tried that – but I'd give it a go!”

…then you've found some companions to experience it with.

And who knows? We might discover a few new basketball fans along the way.

Fancy experiencing basketball on a rather bigger scale?

Why might this be a good group outing?

You don't need to be an established basketball fan to enjoy the occasion.

The attraction here is as much about experiencing a major sporting event at The O2 as it is about knowing every rule of basketball.

For anyone who has never watched the sport live, going with a few other equally curious u3a members could be a great introduction.

And if our earlier suggestion of watching the London Lions appeals to you, this offers the chance to experience the sport again on a much bigger stage.

Make a day of it

The doors open at 12.30pm, so this is a daytime sporting event rather than a late-night trip into London.

The O2 also has numerous restaurants, cafΓ©s and bars, so members could meet for lunch beforehand or have something to eat afterwards and make a proper day of it.

The venue is at Peninsula Square, London SE10 0DX, immediately beside North Greenwich Underground station.

Tickets

Tickets for the 2027 Finals are already on sale through The O2's official ticketing partner, AXS.

Prices vary according to where you choose to sit, so members interested in going could decide together how much they would like to spend and choose seats accordingly.

Perhaps you're already a basketball fan.

Or perhaps you've never seen a basketball match in your life but think:

β€œA sporting final at The O2 sounds like a fun day out.”
